A perennial fern of the Caprifoliaceae family. It is similar to Shinobu, but grows above ground and has large leaves, hence the Japanese name. The rhizomes are creeping and densely leafy. The leaves are finely pinnately divided 3-4 times and entirely glabrous. The spore-bearing leaves are generally large, 40-80 cm long, and the petioles are usually purple-brown. The sporangia are borne opposite each other on the margins of the elongated lobes, and are enclosed in a membranous envelope with the leaf margins folded back. The spores are tetrahedral. It is somewhat common in the shade or sun in warm areas south of Fukushima Prefecture, and prefers well-drained areas such as slopes and rocky areas.
