Imami Bureau - Imamiri no Tsubone

Imami Bureau - Imamiri no Tsubone
Year of death: 19 January 1459 (22 February 1459)
Year of birth: UnknownImamiya no Tsubone generally refers to a new lady-in-waiting. There have been many court ladies in history who were called this, but the most famous is the woman who was the wet nurse of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. She was the daughter of Odate Mitsufuyu. Her name is unknown. She intervened in Yoshimasa's politics and had a great influence on the shogunate. This is also well known from the fact that Imamiya no Tsubone is counted among the "three devils" that were said to be "from the three devils" in graffiti in Kyoto at the time, along with Karasuma Sukenari and Arima Mochiie. In particular, in 1451, Imamiya no Tsubone intervened in the issue of Owari Shugodai, and tried to replace Oda Toshihiro with his relative Oda Gohiro, which caused a great stir within the shogunate. Yoshimasa tried to act according to Imamiya no Tsubone's wishes, but was dissuaded by strong opposition from the shogunate leaders, including Hatakeyama Mochikuni, Hosokawa Katsumoto, and Yamana Mochitoyo. It is said that Yoshimasa's birth mother, Hino Shigeko, tried to retire to Saga because she was angry at Imami no Tsubone for introducing her to him. In 1459, Yoshimasa's wife, Hino Tomiko, became pregnant, but the baby was stillborn, and rumors spread that this was the result of Imami no Tsubone's curse. As a result, Imami no Tsubone was arrested and exiled to Okishima Island in Lake Biwa by the Samurai-dokoro Shoshidai Kyogoku Mochikiyo, but on the way there she committed suicide at Koryo-ji Temple in Koryo-sho, Gamo County, Omi Province. The following month, Yoshimasa's concubines, who had been in contact with Imami no Tsubone, were exiled. It is said that this series of events was the result of Hino Shigeko's private orders. Later, in 1463, Yoshimasa donated a memorial service. Her posthumous name was Sesshūin Jumine Yoshihito. <References> Tabata Yasuko, Women in Medieval Japan
