Prince Osakabe

Japanese: 刑部親王 - おさかべしんのう
Prince Osakabe

A prince of Emperor Tenmu. Also written as Oshikabe. His mother was Shishihito no Omi Oomaro no Musumehime. In 672 (the first year of Emperor Tenmu's reign), during the Jinshin War, he accompanied his father to the eastern provinces. In 674, he was ordered by the Emperor to polish the sacred treasures of Isonokami Shrine with ointment. In 679, the Emperor, the Empress, and six princes, including Ogasawara, swore to each other at Yoshino Palace that they would obey the imperial decree and not disobey it. In 681, he submitted the imperial decree and participated in the writing of the "Imperial Chronicles and Ancient Affairs." This is said to be the beginning of the compilation of the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. He participated in the compilation of the Taiho Code as the chief editor, and when Empress Jito passed away in 703 (the third year of the Taiho era), he became the Chief Minister of State and managed national affairs.
