Abbreviated as "microcomputer." An ultra-small computer that consists of one or several LSI elements that perform various computer functions such as a CPU (central processing unit), memory device, and input/output device. This type of CPU is called a microprocessor, and the world's first was announced by Intel Corporation in 1971. CPU performance is indicated by the number of bits that indicate its information processing capacity, and today, CPUs equipped with 64-bit CPUs have been commercialized after going through 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit. Because they are ultra-small, they are used not only in computers but also in all areas of life and production activities, from home appliances to precision machinery and industrial equipment, and are at the heart of today's electronics civilization. In the United States, microcomputers often mean personal computers.

マイコンと略称。CPU（中央処理装置）や記憶装置，入出力装置などコンピューターの諸機能を１個あるいは数個のLSI素子で構成する超小型コンピューター。このCPUをマイクロプロセッサーと呼び，1971年米国インテル社から発表されたものが世界最初。CPUは情報処理能力が示すビット数で性能が示され，４ビット，８ビット，16ビット，32ビットを経て，今日では64ビットのCPU搭載のものも商品化されている。超小型であるため，コンピューターに限らず，家電製品から精密機械，産業用機器まで生活と生産活動のあらゆる分野に応用され，今日のエレクトロニクス文明の核心的存在になっている。米国ではマイクロコンピューターはパーソナルコンピューターを意味することが多い。
