Yuan Dynasty Art

Japanese: 元代美術 - げんだいびじゅつ

The Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), which lasted for about 100 years and was ruled by the Mongolians who arose from outside the Great Wall, was a time when various changes appeared in various fields of art that differed from the previous era. Notable examples include the restorationism that appeared in the world of calligraphy and painting, and new trends in both vessel shape and decoration, such as blue and white (blue and white porcelain) and five-color (red porcelain) that appeared in the field of crafts, especially ceramics. However, just as the art of this period is perceived as being lumped together as "Song and Yuan" for calligraphy and painting, and "Ming and Qing" for crafts, each genre is thought to have its own face facing in a different direction.

塞外よりおこったモンゴル族に支配された元時代(1271‐1368)約100年は，美術の各分野に，前代と相違したさまざまな変化が現れた時期である。書画の世界に登場する復古主義，工芸とくに陶磁器の分野に出現する青花(染付)，五彩(赤絵)などに代表される器形･装飾両面での新たな動向などは，その顕著な例である。しかし，この時代の美術のとらえ方が，書画では〈宋元〉，工芸では〈明清〉とひとくくりにされるように，各ジャンルは，その顔を別の方向に向けていると考えられている。
