…A city in New South Wales, Australia. Population 7,734 (1976). 318 km (by road) west of Sydney and 184 km north of Canberra, on the Lachlan River. The city is the centre of fertile agricultural and pastoral areas, including irrigated agriculture. It is known for light industry, particularly canned asparagus. Founded in 1846. The city's name comes from the Aboriginal word for rock. During World War II, a Japanese prison camp was located here, and a mass escape (August 5, 1944) resulted in the deaths of 247 Japanese and four Australian soldiers. …
