They are settled agriculturalists living in the savannah region of northern Ghana. They cultivate corn and sorghum, and raise livestock as a side job. They speak the Guru language. They live with ethnic groups from the same cultural sphere without clear boundaries. Before British rule, there was no political organization or chiefdom that unified the Talensi as a whole. The most important social unit is the clan, which is further divided into several large lineages with a common ancestor and restrictions on exogamy. Each large lineage is thought to own a certain territory related to its ancestor. The large lineages are further segmented into the smallest unit, the polygamous joint family, whose membership and inheritance rights are all based on the patrilineal principle, and ancestor worship is the framework of this social organization. On the other hand, belief in the earth god strengthens territorial ties, and the priest Tendana also acts as a mediator in case of disputes.
