Japanese: 美東[町] - みとう

A former town in Mine County in the mid-west of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Occupying the upper reaches of the Ota River, a tributary of the Koto River, the town's main settlement, Ota, developed as a market town. Its main industries are agriculture and forestry, with livestock farming and marble processing also taking place. It is in the eastern part of Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, and is home to Kagekiyo Cave and Taisho Cave (both natural monuments) and Safari Land. In 2005, the Akiyoshidai groundwater system was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In March 2008, it was incorporated into Mine County's Akiyoshi Town and Mine City. 129.49 ^km2 . Population: 6,114 (2005).

山口県中西部，美祢(みね)郡の旧町。厚東(ことう)川の支流大田川上流域を占め，主集落の大田は市場町として発達。農林業が主で，畜産，大理石加工も行う。秋吉台国定公園の東部に当たり，景清(かげきよ)穴，大正洞（いずれも天然記念物）やサファリランドがある。2005年に秋吉台地下水系がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2008年３月美祢郡秋芳町と美祢市へ編入。129.49km²。6114人（2005）。
