The ancient Russian name for the Normans. From the beginning of the 9th century to the 11th century, the Normans are known as the second ethnic migration in the history of the Middle Ages in Western Europe. They were a northern Germanic tribe known in Western Europe as the Vikings or Danes, and based in the Baltic Sea, they plundered the coastal areas and established several countries, including the Duchy of Normandy and the Norman conquest of England. In the Slavic world, they were called Varangians (singular Varang), but this did not necessarily mean Normans in the strict sense of the word, and included Saxons and Germanic peoples as well.

ノルマン人の古代ロシア名。9世紀初めから11世紀に西欧中世史のうえで第2次民族移動ともいわれる〈ノルマンの活動〉が知られている。彼らは西欧ではバイキングとも，デーン人とも呼ばれた北方系ゲルマン部族で，バルト海を根拠として沿岸域を略奪し，ノルマンディー公国，ノルマンのイングランド征服などいくつかの国を建てた。スラブ族世界ではワリャーギ(単数はワリャーグ)と呼ばれたが，必ずしも言葉の厳密な意味でのノルマン人ではなく，サクソン人やゲルマン人をも含んでいた。
