A seaweed in the family Myrtleaceae of the order Myrtle. It grows in colonies on rocky reefs close to the low tide line. The algae are 3-5 mm thick rods that branch out bifurcated several times to form a raceme. When the rods are dissected, they are revealed to be a collection of small vesicles that are connected to each other at their bases. In the case of Myrtle, the vesicles have protrusions at the apex. It is widely distributed along the coasts of Japan, as well as around the Malay Peninsula and Australia, the west coast of the United States, the Bering Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It has long been eaten in Japan. Other species in the same genus include the involucre but thick-tipped C. contractum , the slender C. tenue , the irregular C. intricatum , the creeping C. coarctatum and C. adhaerens , as well as the clump-like C. pugniformis and C. mamillosum var. minus . Larger species include the somewhat branched, flat, string-like C. cylindricum which can reach a total length of 15m, and the flat C. latum which is 30cm wide and 1m long.
