Desna River (English spelling)

Japanese: デスナ[川]（英語表記）Desna

A tributary on the eastern bank of the Dnieper that straddles the Russian Federation and Ukraine. It is 1,130 km long and has a drainage area of 88,900 km2. It first flows south from the slopes of the Smolensk Hills at an altitude of about 230 m southeast of Smolensk, passes Bryansk, enters Ukraine, and joins the Dnieper from the eastern bank downstream of Chernigov and a little north of Kiev. In the lower reaches, it forms oxbow lakes and marshes in the basin. The average flow rate is 360 m3/s. It freezes over from December to April of the following year. Regular ships travel upstream on the main river throughout Ukrainian territory.

ロシア連邦とウクライナにまたがって流れる，ドニエプル川東岸の支流。長さ1130km，流域面積8万8900km2。初めスモレンスク南東方，スモレンスク丘陵の標高約230mの斜面から南へ流れ落ち，ブリャンスクを過ぎてウクライナへ入り，チェルニゴフの下流，キエフの少し北で，東岸からドニエプル川に合流する。下流では，流域に三日月湖や湿地をつくる。平均流量は360m3/s。12月～翌年4月には結氷する。ウクライナ領域の本流は全域定期船が遡航（そこう）する。
