Village House - Mura no Ie

Japanese: 村の家 - むらのいえ

A short story by Nakano Shigeharu. Published in Keizai Orai in 1935. Left-wing writer Takabatake Benji was imprisoned for violating the Peace Preservation Law, and for two years he struggled with the fear of illness and insanity, as well as the temptation to change his religion. However, he was released on a suspended sentence and returned home a week ago. His elderly father, Magozo, is a gentle, honest man who has had a hard life, but he has sent letters to the prisoner describing life in the village and has traveled to Tokyo many times to encourage and defend his son. Now the father is explaining to his son all the dead ends, past and present, of the Village House, and telling him that now that he has changed his religion, he should give up writing and become a farmer.

中野重治の短編小説。1935年《経済往来》に発表。左翼作家高畑勉次は治安維持法違反で投獄され，2年間，病気･発狂の恐怖，転向の誘惑と闘ってきたが，執行猶予で出所して，1週間前から帰郷している。老父孫蔵は温和で正直な苦労人だが，村の生活を綴った手紙を獄中に送り，何度も上京して息子を励まし，擁護してきた。今，父は子に〈村の家〉の過去および現在のすべての行き詰りを説き，転向したからには筆を折って百姓になれ，と言う。
