A compound in which two planar polyatomic molecules or ions are arranged in parallel, with a metal atom between them, forming a sandwich-like shape. Typical planar molecules or ions include cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, benzene, and phthalocyanine. For example, bis(cyclopentadienyl)iron(II) (known as ferrocene), a typical example, was first synthesized in 1951 by J. Kealy and P.L. Pauson in England, independently. It has a sandwich structure (also called a drum shape) in which the regular pentagons of the cyclopentadienyl rings are shifted by 54 degrees and overlap, as shown in the figure, and attracted attention as a compound with a structure that had never been known before.
