Incense - Shoko

Japanese: 焼香 - しょうこう

The smoke from the incense is meant to purify and offer a memorial to the body, mind, and spirit of the deceased. After the service, incense is burned by picking up a stick three times, but some sects do not care about the number of times. The order in which people burn incense is generally in the order of closest relationship to the deceased, such as the chief mourner, bereaved family (in order of closest blood ties), organizer, and acquaintances. ■Bow to the bereaved family, then proceed to the front of the incense burner and bow to the portrait of the deceased. ■Burn incense one to three times. ■Put your hands together in prayer, step back a few steps, bow to the bereaved family, and return to your seat.
