King of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Reigned 359-338 BC. Son of Artaxerxes II, he was called Ochus. Upon ascending to the throne, he killed all his brothers and family members who might have claimed the throne. He destroyed the rebellious city of Sidon, and in 343 BC succeeded in reconquering Egypt, which had maintained its independence for over 60 years. He is considered cruel, but his excellent leadership contributed to strengthening the rule of the empire. He was later poisoned to death by his trusted eunuch Bagoas.
