1873‐1960 Dutch astronomer and socialist. Internationally acclaimed for his research into the structure of galaxies and the atmospheres of stars. Invited by the German Social Democratic Party in 1905, he stayed there until 1914, engaged in educational and theoretical activities. During this time he contributed to the formation of left-wing radicalism through the split of the Dutch party and his debate with Kautsky. From World War I to the German Revolution, he was active as a theoretical pillar of left-wing communists in both countries. In 1925 he became a professor at the University of Amsterdam. In the late 1960s, his criticism of Lenin and his ideas on the Council attracted renewed attention. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
