Plymouth Brethren

…German-born British clergyman and social worker. After studying at the University of Halle, he moved to England (1829) and became a clergyman for the Plymouth Brethren (a Christian organization founded in Plymouth in 1830 by JN Darby). In 1836, he established an orphanage in Bristol, where he housed and cared for 2,000 orphans. He believed that prayer to God would provide not only spiritual but also material needs, and he continued to care for the orphans through prayer and donations from philanthropists. …
