Mount Meakan - Mount Meakan

A volcano located on the border between Ashoro Town under the jurisdiction of the Tokachi Regional Subprefectural Bureau and Kushiro City under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro Regional Subprefectural Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. It is 1,499 meters above sea level. In Ainu language, Mt. Oakan is called "Pinneshiri" (male mountain), 15 kilometers northeast, while Mt. Akan is called "Machineshiri" (female mountain). It consists of the main part including the central crater (Nakamachineshiri) and parasitic volcanoes such as Ponmachineshiri and Akan Fuji. The main part including the central crater and Ponmachineshiri are still active. These volcanoes were formed when the Akan Caldera (24 kilometers long, 13 kilometers short) collapsed, and erupted on the caldera walls as a reaction to the collapse. Coniferous forests are widely distributed at the foot of the mountain, and above the sixth station, the shrubs change to a zone of stone pine, and there are many alpine plants. Located in Akan Mashu National Park, it takes about two hours to reach the summit from Meakan Onsen on the western foot of the mountain.

北海道東部、十勝(とかち)総合振興局管内の足寄町(あしょろちょう)と釧路(くしろ)総合振興局管内の釧路市の境界にある火山。標高1499メートル。北東15キロメートルの雄阿寒岳(おあかんだけ)をアイヌ語で「ピンネシリ」（雄山）というのに対し、「マチネシリ」（雌山）という。中央火口（中マチネシリ）を含む主要部と、ポンマチネシリ、阿寒富士などの寄生火山からなり、中央火口を含む主要部とポンマチネシリは現在も活動している。これらの火山群は阿寒カルデラ（長径24キロメートル、短径13キロメートル）が陥没し、その反動でカルデラ壁上などに噴出したもの。山麓(さんろく)は針葉樹林が広く分布し、六合目以上は低木林からハイマツ帯に変わり、高山植物も多い。阿寒摩周(ましゅう)国立公園域で、西麓の雌阿寒温泉から頂上まで約2時間を要する。
