Omaezaki

Japanese:
Omaezaki
A district in southern Shizuoka Prefecture facing the Enshu Nada Sea and Suruga Bay. Former town name. In 1955, Omaezaki Village and Shiraha Village were combined to form a town. In April 2004, it merged with Hamaoka Town to form Omaezaki City. It is an uplifted plateau eroded by the sea, about 40 meters above sea level, and on the south side of the plateau there is a row of sand dunes that continues from the Enshu Nada coast, and at the end of the cape there is a wide flat rock (wave-cut platform) below the sea cliffs. Omaezaki, the central settlement, has been a base for bonito fishing since the early Meiji period, but now it is the second largest deep-sea fishing base after Yaizu, mainly for tuna longline fishing boats. It was not a good port in terms of natural conditions, but in 1959 a large breakwater was built on the north side of the cape and a refuge port was completed. Currently, in addition to deep-sea fishing, various facilities are in place, such as the loading of gravel from the Oi River and a lumber storage facility for imported lumber. Farming on the plateau is centered on field crops, producing vegetables and greenhouse melons. Since 1975, hotels and public lodgings have been built, and the area has developed into a tourist destination. The Shiraha wind-eroded gravel area, sea turtles and their egg-laying sites are natural monuments. The coast along the Enshu Nada Sea belongs to the Omaezaki Enshu Nada Prefectural Natural Park.

Omaezaki

Located in Omaezaki City in southern Shizuoka Prefecture, this cape juts out into the Enshu Nada Sea. It is an uplifted marine eroded plateau about 40m above sea level. A layer of rounded gravel called the Shiraha Gravel Layer, about 6m thick, has been deposited on the Neogene mudstone that forms the base of the plateau, and a long, narrow row of sand dunes stretches from east to west. Below the sea cliffs near the lighthouse at the tip is a wide flat rock (wave-cut platform), and offshore is the Omaezaki Reef. The western slope of the plateau is home to three-sided stones, which have been eroded by the strong winter westerly winds, and are designated as a national natural monument. It belongs to Omaezaki Enshu Nada Prefectural Natural Park.
