A hadith scholar who wrote the Book of Sunan, one of the six books of hadith. After studying in Baghdad, he traveled around the world for about 20 years and collected a total of 500,000 traditions. He compiled 4,800 of these and presented them to his teacher Ibn Hanbal in this book, but many of the isnads (records of the process of transmission) are incomplete. However, because it contains a wealth of legal matters that serve as guidelines for the daily lives of believers, it was widely used as an authority second only to the sahīh collections of Bukhari and Muslim (817-875).

ハディース六書の一つ《スナンの書》を著したハディース学者。バグダードで研鑽後20年ほど諸国を遍歴して総計50万に及ぶ伝承を収集したといわれる。そのうちの4800をまとめて師のイブン･ハンバルに呈したのが同書であるが，イスナード(伝承の過程の記録)に不備なものが多数みられる。ただ信徒の日常の指針となる法関係事項が豊富なため，ブハーリーとムスリム(817‐875)の両サヒーフ集に次ぐ権威として広く利用された。
