Tiruchi

…A religious city in the central part of Tamil Nadu, at the southern tip of India. Also known as Tiruchi. Formerly known as Trichinopoly. Population: 387,000 (1991), metropolitan population: 712,000 (1991). Located at the outflow point of the Cauvery River into the plains, it occupies a strategic and transportation location connecting the delta with the Deccan Plateau. It was often the capital of Dravidian dynasties from the 10th to the 17th centuries, and flourished as one of the centers of Dravidian culture. The rock fort towering over the northern part of the city was the site of a battle in the Karnataka War in the mid-18th century, and the fort still remains today. …
