Iwakura Hospital

...In the course of time, private lodgings for the visitors were opened, and inns called "chaya" were also operated. Four chayas were established during the Bunsei era (1818-30) in Edo, but in the Meiji era, medical care became necessary, so the chayas were renamed "sanatoriums" and in 1884 a family nursing system was established, centered around Iwakura Insane Asylum (later Iwakura Hospital), which oversaw the sanatoriums and treated the disabled. At its peak, there were eight sanatoriums, housing more than 200 people.
