...In the course of time, private lodgings for the visitors were opened, and inns called "chaya" were also operated. Four chayas were established during the Bunsei era (1818-30) in Edo, but in the Meiji era, medical care became necessary, so the chayas were renamed "sanatoriums" and in 1884 a family nursing system was established, centered around Iwakura Insane Asylum (later Iwakura Hospital), which oversaw the sanatoriums and treated the disabled.
