A general term for the hot springs that gush out from the middle of the southwestern slope of the Kirishima volcanic group, which towers over the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. They belong to Kirishima City and are scattered around 600 meters above sea level. In addition to the tourist hot springs of Hayashida, Maruo, Yunotani, and Iodani, there are also Shinyu, Myoban, Sekibira, and Eino-o hot springs, which are suitable for therapeutic baths. There are many fumaroles in the area, and the springs are over 60°C and come in a variety of types, including sulfur springs, aluminum-containing springs, and chloride springs. The Kirishima volcanic area is one of Kyushu's leading mountain tourist destinations, along with Aso and Unzen, and was designated a national park early on, attracting more than 2 million visitors a year. The hot springs in the eastern area of the former Kirishima town are called Kirishima Jingu Onsenkyo. Nearby are Ebino Plateau, which has crater lakes such as Fudoike and Byakushiike, as well as Mount Karakuni and Mount Takachiho. There are buses available from JR Kirishima-Jingu Station on the Nippō Main Line and Kirishima Onsen Station on the Hisatsu Line.
