A fish of the medaka family. It has many local names, with over 2000 in total. In Tokyo, it is called metaka, medaka, or mezaka; in Kyoto, it is called ukinta, okincha, or donbaiko; in Osaka, it is called komanjako, miminjako, or mamenjako; and in Nagasaki, it is called donbo or menda. It is 4 cm long. It is distributed throughout Japan except Hokkaido, the Korean peninsula, and the eastern part of the Asian continent to Hainan Island. It lives in shallow areas such as rice fields and ponds. It swims in groups near the surface and lays eggs in warm seasons. Females swim with fertilized egg masses attached to their anus, but eventually attach them to aquatic plants. It matures about two months after hatching. There are various breeds such as himedaka, shiromedaka, and aomedaka, which are used for experiments in genetics and other fields and for ornamental purposes. In the suburbs of Tokyo, the invasive species mosquitofish, which looks very similar, breeds and is confused with medaka.

メダカ科の魚。地方名がはなはだ多く，その数は2000を超える。東京でメタカ，メダカ，メザカ，京都でウキンタ，オキンチャ，ドンバイコ，大阪でコマンジャコ，ミミンジャコ，マメンジャコ，長崎でドンボ，メンダなど。全長4cm。北海道を除く日本各地，朝鮮半島，アジア大陸東部〜海南島に分布。水田，池などの浅い所にすむ。群をなして表層近くを泳ぎ，暖かい季節に産卵。雌は受精した卵塊を肛門につけたまま泳いでいるが，やがて水草などに付着させる。孵化(ふか)後約２ヵ月で成熟。飼育品種としてヒメダカ，シロメダカ，アオメダカなどがあり，遺伝学などの実験用，観賞用にされる。東京近郊では外見のよく似た外来種カダヤシが繁殖し，メダカと混同される。
