Siemens [company] - Siemens
The largest electrical manufacturer in Germany. Also known as Siemens. Main products are communication equipment, heavy electrical equipment, and medical equipment. In 1847, electrical engineer E. W. von Siemens and mechanical engineer Halske established the Siemens & Halske Telegraph Works. In 1867, they laid an undersea telegraph cable from Ireland to the United States. In 1897, they became a joint-stock company. Since then, they have established a foundation through acquisitions and mergers, and have grown into a major group. After World War II, they developed along with the reconstruction of West Germany. They became a representative European electrical equipment group dealing in all types of heavy and light electrical equipment, and in 1966 they changed their name to their current name. Since the 1990s, they have accelerated the separation and sale of their businesses, and in 1999 they sold their electronic components business to Tyco International of the United States for 2 billion marks. In 1998, they acquired the power generation division other than nuclear power of Westinghouse Electric. They integrated it with the heavy electrical division in the United States to form a new company, Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp. In terms of its relationship with Japan, the Siemens scandal in 1914 and the founding of Fuji Electric in 1923 in collaboration with the Furukawa zaibatsu are well known. In October 1999, Fujitsu merged with its European computer-related division to form a new company, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Headquartered in Munich. Sales for the fiscal year ending September 2011 were 73,515 million euros. →AEG
