1860‐84 A Russian-born French female painter and writer. She went to Paris to study painting and displayed a precocious talent. Her style was a mix of impressionism and naturalism, and she excelled in portraiture, with her most famous work being "Les Enfants" (1883). She was also blessed with literary talent, and her "Diary" (1887), written in French, was highly praised and has made her name known to posterity. The book is filled with intense passion and precocious intelligence, and is also interesting for its portrayal of contemporaries such as Maupassant.
