…When bad weather threatened the autumn harvest, epidemics spread, or natural disasters continued, people would suddenly start pounding rice cakes, setting up kadomatsu pine decorations, pulling sacred ropes, changing clothes, and going out to New Year's celebrations, and this would spread to the neighborhood one after another. This was done in hopes of escaping the dreadfulness of the year and ushering in a new, prosperous year, and is also called kasakushogatsu (temporary New Year) or hayarishogatsu (popular New Year). It was often done before modern times, and was usually held around June. …
