The seventh President of the United States, A. Jackson (in office 1829-37), ignored the custom of holding a cabinet meeting immediately after taking office, and instead decided policy in a meeting with several close aides, including Amos Kendall and William B. Lewis. His political opponents mocked this informal meeting as the Kitchen Cabinet and criticized his arbitrary administration. The influence of the Kitchen Cabinet was particularly strong from 1829 to 1831. However, after the cabinet was replaced in 1831 and supporters of Vice President JC Calhoun left the cabinet, the opinions of the cabinet members began to carry more weight than before.
