Sechium edule; pipinella

Japanese: ハヤトウリ(隼人瓜) - ハヤトウリ(英語表記)Sechium edule; pipinella
Sechium edule; pipinella
A perennial vine of the Cucurbitaceae family, native to tropical America. It was brought to Japan from North America around 1916 and has been cultivated in warm regions, mainly in Kagoshima. The stems can reach over 10m in length, and the leaves are membranous, broadly ovate, and about 10-20cm long. It is monoecious, with male flowers in a raceme and female flowers in the same leaf axil as the male inflorescence. Both are small and have white corollas. The fruits are edible, fleshy, and roughly pear-shaped, 8-17cm long. Fiber can be extracted from the old vines. The tuberous roots are also rich in starch and can be used as livestock feed.
