Japanese: 機械加工 - きかいかこう（英語表記）machining

The use of machine tools to process metal or similar materials (such as plastics). Some works of art and crafts are produced almost entirely by hand, and therefore their value lies in the small number of pieces produced or in the subtle differences between each piece. In contrast, machining is aimed at producing industrial products, and therefore the emphasis is on mass-producing identical pieces with high precision, and for this reason dedicated or general-purpose machine tools have been developed to perform each type of processing.

工作機械を用いて金属またはそれに準ずる材料(プラスチックなど)を加工すること。美術品や工芸品では，その製作がほとんど手作業に依存しているものもあり，それゆえの製作数の少なさ，あるいは個々の微妙な差異に価値があることが多々ある。これに対して機械加工は工業製品を作ることをその目的としており，したがって同一形状のものをすぐれた精度で大量に作ることが重要視され，このためそれぞれの加工を行う専用あるいは汎用の工作機械が開発されている。
