Pit house

...In cold regions, homes need to be able to keep warm, while in hot regions they need to be able to withstand the heat. Pit houses, semi-underground homes that are covered in soil and sealed and found from northern Asia to northwestern America, were developed as a way to adapt to the harsh winters, and the construction of their posts and entrances also takes snow accumulation into consideration. In general, pit dwellings are said to have originated in cold northern regions.
