[Born] 1542 [Died] 1605 A Polish nobleman. He received a humanistic education in France and Italy, and in 1565 became a privy councillor to Sigismund II Augustus. After Augustus' death, he opposed the Habsburg candidate, and succeeded Stephen Batorui in ascending to the throne. He served under him as chancellor (1578-86) and commander-in-chief (81-86). He achieved success in the wars against Russia (80-81) and the Habsburgs (88). He also contributed to the ascendance of Sigismund III Vasa to the throne, but opposed his pro-Habsburg policies, leading to conflict. He led the country to victory in the wars against Sweden (1600) and Turkey (02). He also supported the arts and sciences, and made Zamość the easternmost centre of Renaissance culture. Zamoyski |
