Currant (English spelling)
A deciduous small fruit tree of the Saxifragaceae family cultivated mainly in Northern Europe. It is a type of currant with small fruits 5 to 8 mm in diameter that hang down in clusters, and is also called currant. It is broadly divided into red currant (illustration) and black currant (black currant) based on the color of the fruit. Red currant is a species of Ribes rubrum L., which is widely distributed from Central and Northern Europe to Northern Asia, R. petraeum Wulf., which is distributed in the high mountains of Europe, Africa, and Siberia, and R. sativum Syme, which is distributed in Eastern Europe, and a group of hybrid varieties of these. Black currant is a selection of R. nigrum L., which is widely distributed from Europe to Asia.

おもに北ヨーロッパで栽培されるユキノシタ科の落葉性小果樹。径5~8mmの小果が房状に下垂するスグリ類で,カラントともいい,果実の色でアカフサスグリ(レッドカラントredcurrant)(イラスト)とクロフサスグリ(ブラックカラントblackcurrant)とに大別される。アカフサスグリは中央・北ヨーロッパから北アジアにまで広く分布するRibes rubrum L.,ヨーロッパの高山やアフリカ,シベリアに分布するR.petraeum Wulf.,それに東ヨーロッパのR.sativum Symeおよびそれらの交雑された品種群であり,クロフサスグリはヨーロッパからアジアにかけて広く分布するR.nigrum L.から選抜されたものである。
