Kannabiyama Kofun

...Located in the center of the Fukui Plain, Fukui Prefecture's capital is the prefectural capital. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. Its population is 255,604 (1995). It was formerly called Kitanosho. The current city began in 1575 (Tensho 3) when Shibata Katsuie built Kitanosho Castle (the site of the main citadel is said to be the current Shibata Shrine) on the natural levee on the north bank of the Asuwa River. In 1600 (Keicho 5), Yuki Hideyasu rebuilt the castle and moved the main citadel to the current prefectural office site, expanding the castle town. The current downtown area around Daimyo Rotary was originally within the castle grounds, and was a fortified structure surrounded by multiple moats. ...
