The flowers bloom around June, and after the leaves unfold, numerous catkins gather at the tips of the new branches. The male inflorescence is yellow-green and elongated, slanting upward at the bottom. The female inflorescence is at the tip, and usually the base is female, but the upper half is dominated by male flowers. The flowers have no perianth, and the male flowers have stamens lined up in the bract axils, while the female flowers have wing-like bracts and fused pistils in the bract axils.
