A Western-style sword. Its original form was a weapon used by Saracen pirates, and a modified long sword is said to have been used in Germany since the 14th century. After King Louis XIV of France adopted it as a cavalry weapon in 1670, it spread throughout Europe and was used as a cavalry weapon and for the ceremonial uniforms of high-ranking military personnel. The former Japanese military also adopted it as a command sword and cavalry weapon from the Meiji period, as it is lighter than a Japanese sword and can be handled with one hand. Police officers also carried it from 1882 (Meiji 15), but it was abolished after the Pacific War. It is currently used for ceremonial purposes by the Self-Defense Forces. The fencing sabre is a type of this sword. [Yoshio Kobashi] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
