Lake Towada

Japanese: 十和田湖 - とわだこ
Lake Towada
A caldera lake on the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures. It has an area of 61 km2 , a circumference of 46 km, an elevation of 400 m above sea level, a maximum depth of 327 m, and a transparency of 9 m. The outline of the lake was formed by a collapse caused by early activity of the Hakkoda volcanoes, and Lake Nakaumi was formed by a second collapse after the formation of the central cone. The water drains from Nenokuchi on the east shore, and flows into the Pacific Ocean as the Oirase River. The mountains surrounding the lake shore are the outer rim of the caldera, including Mt. Ohanabe (1,011 m) and Mt. Shiraji (1,034 m). The lake side is a steep cliff, and the outer slope is covered with a mixed forest of maple, beech, and pine. The fresh greenery in spring and the autumn leaves are beautiful. In 1903, Wainai Sadayuki succeeded in cultivating kokanee salmon. The Oide fish farm is located on the southwest shore. The area, including the Oirase Gorge, has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. It is part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park.

Lake Towada and Wadako

This is the former area of Towada City, in the southwest of the city, in the southern part of Aomori Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Oirase River. It was incorporated as Towada Town in 1955. As there was a town of the same name in Akita Prefecture, it was renamed Towadako Town in 1975. It was merged with Towada City in 2005. Most of the area is covered in forests and wilderness. During the Edo period, it belonged to the Morioka Domain and was governed by the Gonohe magistrate. The western half is within the designated area of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. In 1963, construction was carried out to draw hot water from Sarukura Onsen 12km away, and the Towada Lake Onsen hot spring resort was born. It is home to the Towada Lake Onsen Ski Resort and the Yunohira Highlands.
