Bearded tit - Bearded tit

Japanese: ヒゲガラ(髭雀) - ヒゲガラ(英語表記)bearded tit
Bearded tit - Bearded tit
A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher. It is named after the whisker-like black spot that runs downward from the base of the male's beak. It is about 16 cm long, and the male has a gray head, a light yellow-brown back, and a whitish belly. The undertail is black. The female is generally brown and pale in color. It is found from Europe through Asia Minor and the southern part of the former Soviet Union to the northeastern part of China. It occasionally migrates to Japan as a vagrant. It lives in reed beds, often in flocks of a few to about 50 birds. It skillfully moves between reed stalks and feeds mainly on insects from spring to summer, and mainly on reed and sedge seeds in autumn and winter.
