King of Sparta. Reigned 469?-427 BC. Father of Agis II and Agesilaus. He prevented the Helots, who rose up in revolt following a major earthquake in Sparta in 464 BC, from entering Sparta, and was also active in putting down the rebellion. On the eve of the Peloponnesian War, he tried to avoid war by calmly explaining the realities of the situation, but when the war broke out he led the Peloponnesian army invading Attica repeatedly, and in 429 BC attacked Plataea.
