Sanogawa Ichimatsu

Japanese: 佐野川市松 - さのがわいちまつ

A Kabuki actor. There are three generations, but the first is the most famous.

First World

(1722-62) was born in Fushimi, Kyoto, the son of a samurai. He made his debut as a child actor in a play in Kyoto in 1733 (Kyoho 18). In February 1741 (Kanpo 1), he went to Edo as a wakashugata (young man actor) and played the role of Kumenosuke in "Kouya Shinju." It is well known that the cobblestone pattern he used on his costume became popular under the name "ichimatsuzome" (checkered dye). In 1754 (Horeki 4), he switched to playing young female roles, and by 1762 he had risen to the position of representative young female actors in Edo, but died the same year. He was a man of great beauty, and was particularly good at domestic roles.

II

(1747-1785) A disciple of Ichimura Uzaemon VIII. He played the roles of young men and women, but later switched to acting as a swindler. The third was the former name of the first Ichikawa Aragoro.

初世

（1722―62）武士の子として京都・伏見(ふしみ)に生まれる。1733年（享保18）京都の芝居に子役として初舞台。若衆方(わかしゅがた)として41年（寛保1）2月江戸に下り、『高野(こうや)心中』の粂之介(くめのすけ)に扮(ふん)し、衣装に用いた石畳の模様が「市松染」の名で流行したのは有名である。54年（宝暦4）若女方(わかおんながた)に転じ、62年には江戸の若女方の代表者の地位まで昇ったが、その年に没した。美貌(びぼう)の持ち主で、とくに世話物の役が得意であった。
