A small sea that is adjacent to the ocean via an island, island archipelago, or peninsula, and is underlain by oceanic crust. Marginal seas and the Mediterranean Sea are collectively called adjoining seas. Examples include the Sea of Japan, East China Sea, South China Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Bering Sea, North Sea, Irish Sea, Gulf of California, and Bass Strait. As they are close to areas of human activity, they are easily affected by them, and are important in terms of the environment, undersea resources, and seafloor resources, making them closer to us than the oceans.
