Geoje Island

Japanese: 巨済島 - きょさいとう
Geoje Island

The second largest island in Korea (Republic of Korea). It is located on the southern coast at the mouth of Jinhae Bay. Its area is 399.51 square kilometers. Including the main island, there are 60 islands (10 inhabited, 50 uninhabited) that make up Geoje City, South Gyeongsang Province (Geoje City population 167,231, 2000). The mild climate makes it a good place to escape the cold and heat. There are many hills on the island, with a small amount of flat land along the coast. The fishing port of Jangseongpo is the center of the island. With a mild climate and high rainfall, the island is self-sufficient in food, and yuzu, bamboo shoots, pineapples, and other crops are cultivated. Oyster farming is popular along the coast. There are shipyards such as Daewoo and Samsung, making it the center of Korea's shipbuilding industry.
