A silver coin that circulated in Islamic society alongside the dinar. The first dirhams were imitations of Sassanid silver coins, but like the dinar, in 698/9 the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik minted new coins with a legal weight of about 2.97 g, which were used as the standard currency until around the 10th century. The exchange rate with the dinar varied depending on the time and place, but the rule was that 10 or 12 dirhams was worth 1 dinar.
