Sarton, George Alfred Leon
Born: August 31, 1884 in Ghent
[Died] March 22, 1956. Cambridge, Massachusetts. An American historian of science born in Belgium. He studied chemistry, celestial mechanics and mathematics at Ghent University, and received his degree in mathematics in 1911. He emigrated to England during World War I, then to the United States (1915), where he became a naturalized citizen (22). He became a lecturer in the history of science at George Washington University, and was a member of the Carnegie Institution for Science (18), before becoming a lecturer at Harvard University (20) and a professor of the history of science at the same university (40-51). Based on the idea of ​​"new humanism," he worked on the history of science while collecting and organizing historical materials, and working to establish the International Society for the History of Science. His main works include "History of Science and New Humanism" (36) and "Science and Tradition" (51).
