Shimato Station - Shimato Station

Japanese: 島門駅 - しまとのえき

One of the stations in Chikuzen (Fukuoka Prefecture) established by the Ritsuryo state. There is no consensus on its location, but it is most likely located in Shimazu, Shimakado Village, Onga County (present-day Shimazu, Onga Town), as identified in the Onga County Records. The place name Shimakado is ancient and appears in a poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. According to the Engishiki, the station had 23 horses, the most of any station in Chikuzen. The Onga County Records attributes this to the fact that the station also served as a water station, and this view is likely correct, as the legend in Hitomaro's poem reads, "When we go down to Tsukushi, we build it by sea."

律令国家によって設けられた筑前(福岡県)の駅の一つ。所在地に定説はないが，《遠賀郡誌》が比定する遠賀郡島門村大字島津(現，遠賀町大字島津)が最も可能性が高い。島門の地名は古く柿本人麻呂の歌にも見える。駅に置く馬は《延喜式》によれば23疋で，筑前各駅の駅馬数のなかで最も多い。《遠賀郡誌》はこの理由を水駅を兼ねていたことに求めているが，人麻呂の歌の詞書に〈筑紫に下る時，海路に作る〉とあることから，この見解は正しいだろう。
