Its leaves resemble those of the peony, hence the name Ruiyobotan (a type of peony) (illustration). It is a perennial plant of the Berberidaceae family that grows in relatively dark and damp places in deep mountains. It is 40-70cm tall and hairless. It has several scale leaves at the base. The leaves are alternate in pairs, with the lower leaves being trifoliate and the upper leaves being bifoliate. Inflorescences emerge from the tip of the stem and the upper leaf axils. The flowers are an inconspicuous yellow-green color. There are usually nine sepals, with the inner six being large and petal-like. The petals are extremely small and nectar-like.
