Order Gruidae, Family Gruidae. Total length 85-100cm. Standing head height is about 76cm, making it the smallest of all cranes. Face and neck are black, with the feathers on the front of the neck becoming ornamental feathers and extending over the upper chest. There are white ornamental feathers extending from behind the eyes to the back of the head. Head, back of the neck, back, tail, chest and abdomen are grayish white. Wings have black flight feathers and grayish white coverts. The feathers on the tertiary flight feathers and rump are long and extend like a feather fuzz. Legs are black. The tip half of the bill is reddish, and the base half is yellow. They breed from Ukraine to southern Siberia, Mongolia and western Northeast Asia, and spend the winter around Sudan in Africa and from Pakistan to India and Myanmar. Some of them are known to cross the Himalayas during migration. Unlike other cranes, they breed in grasslands and semi-deserts. Only occasionally do a small number of them migrate to Japan.

ツル目ツル科。全長 85～100cm。立ったときの頭の高さがおおよそ 76cmで，ツル類中最小。顔から頸部は黒く，前頸部の羽毛は飾り羽になって上胸部に重なるように伸びている。眼の後方からも後頭部に伸びる白い飾り羽がある。頭上，後頸部，背，尾，胸腹部は灰白色。翼は風切が黒く，雨覆は灰白色。三列風切と腰の羽毛は長く，蓑毛状に伸びる。脚は黒色。嘴の先半分は赤みを帯び，基部半分は黄色。ウクライナからシベリア南部，モンゴル，北東アジア西部にかけて繁殖分布し，アフリカのスーダン周辺とパキスタンからインド，ミャンマーに渡って越冬する。渡りのときに一部はヒマラヤ山脈を越えることが知られている。ほかのツル類と違い，草原や半砂漠で繁殖する。日本には，ごくまれに少数が渡来する。
