A city in the southern part of Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1948. The northern half is the Osaka Plain, and the southern half is the northern slope of the Izumi Mountains. The city faces Osaka Bay and has a developed central area. In the early modern period, it flourished as a fishing base, and cotton cultivation was also thriving. It is one of the centers of the Senshu spinning and weaving industrial area and is known for its towel production. It produces cotton cloth, hosiery, and ancillary products such as shuttles and wooden pipes, as well as wire rope and bicycle spokes. It has a deep-sea fishing base and a fishery complex with a fishery processing facility. It is also a thriving producer of rice and onions, which are grown as a second crop, using reservoir irrigation. The city is connected by the Hanwa Line, the Nankai Electric Railway Main Line, the Hanshin Expressway Bayshore Line, and the Hanwa Expressway. In 1994, Kansai International Airport opened offshore, and Osaka Rinku Town was built. It has an area of 56.51 km2 . Population: 100,801 (2010).
