Tsuyama Domain

Japanese:
Tsuyama Domain

This was a domain that ruled the Tsuyama region of Mimasaka Province (Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture). In 1603 (Keicho 8), Mori Tadamasa came from Kawanakajima in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture) to become the lord of Mimasaka Province with a fief of 186,500 koku. Tadamasa entered the country, and the following year built Tsuyama Castle, constructed a castle town, and conducted a national land survey. In 1631 (Kan'ei 8), Tadamasa's grandson Seki Nagatsugu became the second lord of the domain, and implemented city laws, forest land surveys, and county system reforms. In 1674 (Enpo 2), Nagatsugu appointed his second son Nagayoshi as the third lord. In 1686 (Jokyo 3), Nagatsugu's eldest son Tadatsugu's son Naganari grew up and became the fourth lord of the domain. Naganari ordered his elder retainer, Nagao Katsuaki, to compile the Sakuyōshi. In 1695 (Genroku 8), he built a doghouse in Nakano, Edo, by order of the shogunate, and the finances of the domain became extremely poor. In 1697, Naganari died of an illness, and Naganari's uncle, Seki Atsutoshi (the biological son of Nagatsugu), was approved by the shogunate as his successor, but he became mentally unstable on the way to Edo, and the Moritsuyama domain was discontinued (the retired former lord, Nagatsugu, was given 20,000 koku of land in Nishiehara, Bitchu).

In 1698, Matsudaira Naganori (later Nobutomi, Echizen clan) was given 100,000 koku of land in Mimasaka province and entered Tsuyama Castle. Upon entering the province, Naganori strengthened the tax rates in rural areas, which led to a peasant uprising known as the Takakura Disturbance. In 1721 (Kyoho 6), Nobutomi died and was succeeded by 6-year-old Matsudaira Asagoro, but he also died in 1726, causing turmoil throughout the province with the Sanchu Uprising. The shogunate appointed his adopted son Matsudaira Nagahiro as lord of the domain and reduced his territory to 50,000 koku. After that, Nagataka, Yasuchika, Yasuharu, Katsutaka, Naritami, and Yasutomo succeeded him as lord of the domain until the Meiji Restoration. Katsutaka adopted Ginnosuke (Naritami), the son of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari, in 1817 (Bunka 14), and was given an additional 50,000 koku of rice. Naritami implemented various policies during the Restoration, but political instability at the end of the Edo period and an excessive burden of tribute led to a government uprising in 1866 (Keio 2). The domain was abolished in 1871 (Meiji 4), and the domain was incorporated into Tsuyama Prefecture, then Hojo Prefecture, and in 1876 it was incorporated into Okayama Prefecture.
