[history]
The name appears as one of the stations on the ancient Kumano pilgrimage road during the Insei period, and Abeno Oji (now Abeno Oji Shrine) was a place of worship at Kumano Shrine. In 1338 (Engen 3/Ryakuo 1), during the early period of the Northern and Southern Courts, Kitabatake Akiie of the Southern Court marched east from Mutsu and approached Aonogahara with unstoppable force, but was stopped from entering Kyoto by the valiant fighting of Momoi Naotsugu. He passed through Nara and fought a fierce battle with the Northern Court at Ishizu, where he was finally defeated and killed.
